About
Nepal
Nepal is a heavenly abode
that lies along the central section of the Greater
Himalayas, bordered by Tibet to the north and India
to the east, south and west. It comprises an area
of 147,181 sq. km. and has a population of about 22
million. The country is an inspiring example of homogenous
religion where Hinduism and Buddhism co-exists harmoniously,
despite ninety percent of the people being Hindus.
Along with the cultural, geographical and religious
diversity, Nepal is a land of spectacular mountains
and irresistible natural beauty. The world’s
tallest mountain Mount Everest (8,878m) and many other
popular mountains towers the landscape of Nepal. No
wonder, trekking in nepal
is an adventure of a lifetime!
Geography
Geographically, the country
can be divided into three major regions. The southern
lowlands known as the Terai occupies 17% of the total
surface area and has a hot, tropical climate with
extensive farming land, sub tropical forest and marshes.
This region inhabits nearly 50%of the entire population
and agriculture is still the dominant occupation for
the Nepalese people. However, there are some industries
in this region and the industrial towns are Biratnagar,
Butwal, and Bhairwara. On the other hand, the central
hill areas have a cooler sub-tropical climate and
the northern region has an alpine climate. Interestingly,
the hill region, made up of the Mahabharat and Churia
ranges cover 65% of the land and climb in elevation
from 500-3000m.
The Himalaya range runs along the northern border
of Nepal and makes up 16% of the total land area of
the country which inhabits some of the rarest and
beautiful animals like the snow leopard and Danphe
bird.
Ethnic Groups
Nepal prides itself for the
peaceful settlement of various ethnic groups. If the
Sherpas reside in the higher regions of central and
eastern Nepal, then the middle hills are reigned by
of Kirats, Gurungs, Tamangs etc. Similarly, Tharus
are the main ethnic group in Terai. But whatever the
ethnic groups, the Nepali people are very hospitable,
simple and friendly, devoid of guile and sophistication.
Major
